About Me
Professional Experience
I have worked as a web developer for nearly a decade and over the years I have worn many hats — user-interface designer, content developer, educator, internet marketing consultant, editor, graphic designer and web server administrator. As such, over the years I have acquired a large 'toolkit' of skills.
Web Development
Since 1999, I have designed and implemented websites for small businesses, non-profit organizations, schools and even the US Army. In the early days, I "hacked around" with HTML and table-based design. Then, I discovered CSS and XHTML and realized the importance of separating design and content. My first experience with server-side code was with PHP/mySQL. More recently, I have worked as a contractor, developing with ASP.NET and C#. My focus has been upon creating rich user-interface design that supports powerful middle-ware applications. Of course, JavaScript has always been a part of my toolkit for adding client-side interactivity. Recently, I have begun using Ajax to add Web 2.0 functionality to websites.
User-Interface (UI) and User-Experience (UX) Design
As the World Wide Web evolves, greater emphasis is being placed on rich user experience. As a UX and UI analyst, I have experience assessing end-user needs and expectations and translating that into compelling user-interface designs that attract and retain web users.
Graphic Design
I received my formal training in graphic design at Western Washington University, in Bellingham, WA. While there I specialized in graphic design, photography and print technology. There was no "web" back then. However, my training and background in visual communications has provided a solid foundation for the web development I have done since. As a web designer, I have designed logos, user interfaces and web graphics. I have helped business establish their web identity through thoughtful application of design theory.
Flash/ActionScript 2.0 & 3.0
I have experience with Flash and ActionScript 3.0. I have created web-based animations, games and motion graphics. I have taught animation and game development using Flash and ActionScript.
Educator / Consultant
I have six years of experience as a Technical Educator. I have taught web development and design, ASP.NET, C#, VB.NET and Java. At various times in my career I have done formal presentations on web development topics to business people and government officials. In 2001, I served as a web development consultant for FORSCOM — the Forces Command of the US Army.
